The UNCG TubaBand has been in existence since 1974, when
then teacher, David Lewis, (tubist with the North Carolina Symphony) founded
the ensemble. During the early years, many concerts were given on and off
campus, as well as at regional TUBA events. Under Lewis’ leadership, the
group sponsored TubaChristmas events (held annually since 1974!) in the
central North Carolina area, and brought in many guest artists to perform
with them. Dennis AsKew came to UNCG in 1992, and has led the ensemble in
the years following. Since then, the group has continued to sponsor the
annual TubaChristmas events in Greensboro, and has frequently performed in
area public schools, in addition to on campus performances. Members of the
ensemble performed at the 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004 ITEC’s, and
the 1999 TubaMania conference held in Sydney, Australia. Additionally, they
have performed 3 times at the U.S. Army Tuba Euphonium Conference, and at
several regional TUBA/ITEA conferences in the past 16 years.
